My parents gave me their old outdoor furniture when I moved in with John, and it was in pretty bad shape...
The green color was all worn out, and the seat cushions didn't match (I think one of them was a replacement for one that was lost...)
They definitely needed a face-lift!
First, the cushions. A squirrel tried to take the stuffing out of the striped one on the right, and I really wanted both of the cushions to match. I don't have a sewing machine (nor do I know how to use one), and my hand-sewing is okay (at best). So I had to think of another option.
John and I made a run to Goodwill and I found these brightly colored pillowcases!! They were $1.99 for the pair, so I snatched them up.
I stuffed the pillows into the cases (they fit just about perfectly - woohoo!), then taped over the ends with extra-strength Gorilla tape (about $4).
I know - I'm so classy.
Fudge helped watch the process. ;)
Yes, it looks a bit silly from the bottom, but you won't see that part! Also, I figured it'd be a bonus to have the pillowcases removable, because at the beginning of every year I could wash them and then just slide them back on again. Pretty smart, huh? I was pretty proud of myself for thinking of that. Haha!
Next thing to do was to spray paint the furniture.
We went to Home Depot and got a couple of cans of purple outdoor spray paint. I totally underestimated how much paint it would take - so I had to go back and get a couple more cans. Everything below took 4 cans of spray paint total (that includes a partial 2nd coat on both chairs for any spots I missed the first time over).
I sprayed them in the garage (with the door open), but I will definitely use a mask next time!! I didn't think of it initially, and I had purple boogers the rest of the day. Probably not the safest idea, and I'm kicking myself now for not wearing one!
But the chairs turned out great!!
4 cans of spray paint at about $4.50 a piece = $18.00!
I waited a full hour and a half or so for them to dry.... then....
.....VOILA!!!
The finished product!
Don't they just look wonderful?! I love the bright and happy colors they bring to the front porch now. They look so amazing, and I feel like I got all new furniture - but the update only cost me a total of about $25.00. It was SO EASY - and it just took a few hours' time to complete.
That's pretty darn awesome. :)
Here's a side-by-side picture just for fun! What a difference, huh?? :)

Refashioning Tips - Update your closet (for free!)
I randomly came across this blog yesterday through my Pinterest page, and I'm just loving all of this girl's refashioning ideas! She takes old clothes and makes them new again - and shows you how she does it through her blog. SO awesome.
Now I need to get myself a sewing machine! ;)
Here are some tips that she gives on her site (for "Refashion 101"):
1. Learn to use your sewing machine. This is huge for me. Your clothing will most likely look homemade if you are just tying knots, or gluing things on. You only need to know the basics of sewing for most refashion projects, but doing real seams will make a world of difference in making your clothing look professional.
2. Utilize Pinterest. There are so many amazing ideas on there, but not just DIY projects. Most of the things I make or refashion come from outfits I see models or other bloggers wearing. An idea is usually sparked when I see a model wearing a shirt with a similar color or pattern to a shirt I already own, and from there I can figure out how to manipulate my shirt to look like the models'.
3. Make a "repair box" and then go through your closet and put everything in there that you don't wear. Going through your closet one piece at a time lets you know what you have to work with when refashioning. Then when you see a refashioning idea, you know exactly what you own and how you can use it to make a piece you love. Also, work on each piece in the repair box one at a time. Seeing each item individually can help the task seem easier. Attacking your whole closet at once will get overwhelming really fast. Some of my clothes have only needed a simple seam for me to love them again (baggy sleeves are a big one for me...I've taken in so many sleeves and suddenly the cardigan or shirt fits me like a dream and makes me love it again).
4. Clean out your closet. I have a strict policy that I don't keep anything in my closet that I don't like and won't wear. I either get rid of it or put it in the repair box. Having a big closet full of clothes that I don't like makes me unhappy. Who cares if you have a lot of clothes in your closet if you hate them all? It's okay if your closet is small if you love and will wear every single item in there.
5. Don't be limited to your closet only. Utilize your husband's (or boyfriend, or brother) old clothes, if he's going to get rid of them. I did that with my polo refashion, and it's now one of my favorite tops. Also, there may be lots of potential in cheap thrifted items -- taking in the sides or hemming the bottom can often make an awful piece into an amazing piece.
6. Accept the fact that some clothes are not fixable. I've sent plenty of shirts to Goodwill, or thrown them away, because there is nothing I can do with them (after I've tried). Don't hang on to it forever, hoping that it will somehow get new life, or it will become a thorn in your side or a wet blanket for your creativity. Sometimes you just have to throw things away. It's okay.
7. Learn how to layer. Pinterest is another great guide for this, as are fashion blogs. Style is about putting pieces together in interesting and creative ways. If you learn how to mix pieces, you have endless outfit possibilities, even if you're using the same pieces over and over. Use belts, scarves, cardigans, and tights to mix and match your clothing, and make it feel new and fresh. I've had some of the same pieces in my closet for years that I've always worn the same way, and suddenly when I layer them together, new interesting outfits are born.
8. Re-purpose. Put a shirt on over a dress, and turn that dress into a skirt for a day. Or the opposite -- put a skirt on over the dress and turn it into a top. Use a thin scarf as a belt, or a headwrap. Wrap long necklaces around your wrist to create the look of several bracelets. When you start thinking outside of the box, style and creativity start developing.
9. If you can, buy something new every once in a while. Having a new piece in your wardrobe can spark new ideas, make a bunch of new outfits, and make you feel like your closet is staying current.
I love love LOVE tip #8 about re-purposing things that you wouldn't wear in a "typical" way - sometimes I struggle to think outside of the box for sure.
Check out Merricks Art here, and send her some love! Her style is super duper cute, and she has some really amazing & creative ideas.
I really want to go through my closet and give it a facelift, especially since I can't go shopping due to my Spending Fast. Not only is this method FREE, but it's totally green! I LOVE THAT!

Backyard Decorating - short-term results!
Remember how I was looking for outside decorating ideas in this post for my sister's graduation? Well apparently a LOT of other people have been looking for some inspiration, 'cause that post has gotten a lot of hits! Fun!
Glad I'm not the only one needing help in that area...
But I did get my backyard decorating done (on a very tight / nonexistent budget, of course), and here are the results!
BEFORE...
Now, I know it's not a HUGE difference or anything, but I was happy with what I could do for my sister's party! The picnic table has been wonderful - although I still need to paint it, it was a great find (Craigslist, $40)!
The cloth banner is all thanks to Kendra - she used it at her wedding, and lent it to me for the party. It really helped tie everything together, and I think it looked super cute!
I would love to get some more permanent-ish furniture out there (as opposed to camping chairs), but these did for now (donated by my lovely parents).
My dad even gave us some rad little Chinese lanterns on a string to hang alongside the house - they really looked wonderful, and the glow was warm and lovely at night.
And of course, the fire pit helped with that too once the party started dwindling down to the last party-goers...
I know everyone looks bored here, but this is actually "relaxed". Or "drunk" - one of the two. Haha!

Weght Loss - Tracking Idea
While strolling down Pinterest lane the other day, I came across a pretty rad idea!
What a great visual motivator!! As you might know, I'm a very visual person - hence the reason why I started my "money I'm NOT spending" tracking sheet for my Spending Fast (and the reason why I love Pinterest so much). ;) I need a little bit more than the average bear to actually motivate myself - I need to SEE where my money is going. So this is going to work in a similar way for me!
I decided to whip up a couple of my own, with re-used jars I had in my cabinet.
Now, I don't really have that much to lose. In my New Year's Resolution for this year, I originally wanted to lose 40 pounds. Well luckily I'm still down my first 10, which I just discovered this morning (WOOT!), and I decided that 20 more pounds would make me very happy = 30 pounds total.
To be honest, 40 was kind of a pipe dream, and I don't think it would've been terribly healthy for me either. Right now I'm at 170 lbs, and am still very insecure about my tummy pooch (everyone has their most hated area - that is mine for sure). The lowest I've ever gotten weight-wise in my adult life was about 143, and I was struggling to stay at that weight. I'd rather have a few extra pounds on me and be happy, ya know!? :)
I set the lil' jars on my window sill in my bathroom (between all of my pretty little plants). Just so that I would see them every day, and remind myself to check in on how I am doing! I also didn't have anything cool like pretty marbles - I had to think "what do I have that can be counted.... PENNIES!" so that's what I used.
Looking at it now though, 20 pennies look pretty pathetic! Ha! I'm going to have to try something else when I get home. ;) I have a lot of wine corks saved that I was going to use for a project, so maybe some pretty painted corks will do the trick.
----
And they TOTALLY did! Ha!
Yes, that means that I lost 1 pound over the weekend too. :) WOOHOO!
I just took some corks that we'd saved, and cut them in half. Then I used some colored markers to doodle on them to make 'em a little prettier. I think they turned out great!
I'm making little changes in my life to take the extra weight off. I'm trying really hard to make good choices with every meal. Here's hoping I can make it stay off this time! :)
