Red Bull Energy Drink Diet = Heart Attack

As posted on "That's Fit".... YIKES!

can of Red BullRed Bull diet? Bull-oney.

Brooke Robertson, 23, from New Zealand, went about shedding pregnancy pounds in an unusual manner. Robertson felt that Red Bull energy drinks suppressed her appetite, so she started drinking 10 to 14 cans each day. For food, Robertson had an occasional handful of dry cereal.

The result? Robertson lost 98 pounds in eight months. And then she survived a heart attack.

This is a diet plan you can file in the severely bad idea category.

Clearly, going overboard on a highly caffeinated drink is a bad move. But trying to lose weight through severe restriction of any form isn't wise.

Take the original Beverly Hills Diet as an example. The diet plan, circa 1981, recommended eating only fruit for the first 10 days. After that, other foods were slowly added. Not only was the diet based on shaky, inaccurate or non-existent science, many weight loss experts felt the plan was potentially harmful.

When you deprive your body of the nutrients and energy it needs, you likely will lose weight. But you may be harming your body much more than you are doing it a favor. And once you loosen the reins on your stringent plan, your body will gain weight back.

For weight loss to really stick, you need to follow a plan that can last for a lifetime. Eating healthfully by selecting a variety of nutrient-dense foods (such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean protein), keeping your total calories in an appropriate range and exercising regularly are the foundation of a healthy lifestyle -- and a healthy weight.

Sedona Road Trip - Memorial Day 2009!

I had a wonderful Memorial Day weekend with my girlfriends in Sedona, AZ. We did some hiking, ate TONS of food, and enjoyed life thoroughly. I didn't think I'd be able to get enough relaxing time in with only 3 full days, but it ended up being perfect. It was a wonderful way to remind myself that it's not where you work, how much you own, what you wear, or who you know that matters. It's experiencing life, nature, love & friendship - and everything else along the way.

I sound like a goddamn hippie, but it's true!

Back to Work with Little Bribes

Hope you had a great Memorial Day weekend! I had a wonderful time in Arizona with the girls (we road-tripped it on out to Sedona), but now it's all back to reality.... at least until next week, when I'm off to Florida for yet another vacation!! GOSH I love that! :)

As a back to work treat, I thought I'd share a "just plain awesome" video. This dude just figured he'd take it into his own hands to make a stop-motion time-lapse video of Death Cab for Cutie's song "Little Bribes". It's pretty amazing!

My doggone jeans...

I know what the 2 followers of my blog are thinking:
"3 posts in 1 day?? Holy shit-nuts!"
One of them might also be thinking:
"Penelope! Get over here & snuggle with me!"

Either way, I'm sorry to overwhelm! :)

I'm realizing that my jean collection has been deteriorating at a rapid pace this year. I LOVE jeans, and I've been collecting numerous pairs of them over the past 10-odd years. They all fit differently, and I love having my "skinny" and "fat" jeans (only when I need them, of course). Unfortunately, they've started to crap out on me this year! My favorite pair finally deteriorated through the crotchal-region (why the heck do girl's jeans do that?) until they finally tore the whole way 'round while I was stepping into my friend's high-clearance SUV last month.

Today, I wore my black faded jeans to work. I thought they were pretty durable, but the zipper unexpectedly broke off in my hand when I went to the bathroom! They're kinda fitted, and I wore a not-so-long shirt, so there was no way to hide my gaping front-side. So I had to run over to American Apparel (it's the closest clothing store to my work), and buy a pair of yoga pants for $26. For cryin' out loud!

I thought these things were supposed to be "built tough" like Fords or something. Maybe I just hold high hopes. Or maybe this is somebody's way of telling me that I have too many pairs of jeans.... or that maybe I shouldn't hold onto a pair of pants I've had since the summer of 2001.

Guess I'll never know...

Wasps - YIKES!

Wasps are invading my apartment! OK - all forms of buggies have started infesting the place lately, probably because of the crazy warm weather we've been having. I wouldn't mind if they were just ladybugs or such (I found one of those in my shower this morning) - but I caught a wasp in a beer mug last night that was flying by my window, and found another one in my bathtub before I went to bed!

Does anybody out there have any good suggestions on how to get rid of a wasp infestation? Maybe 2 wasps isn't quite an "infestation", but it's pretty darn crazy to me. And they have weapons on their butts that I want nothing to do with. Help!

OK GO - With some treadmills!

Just goes to show that it doesn't take a lot of money to make an awesome music video!
This one just cracks me up every time...

Sadness & Creativity

After listening to that Langhorne Slim song over & over again, it made me think about how heartbreak, loss, sadness, depression - can lead to some of the greatest works of art. If you look at so many of the greatest writers, painters, musicians of our time - there tends to be a common thread related to that kind of pain.

I'm of course not saying that happy people haven't produced anything great! I just think it's an interesting thing to think about. Kind of the balance of good & bad, happiness & heartbreak, gain & loss, love & hate -- just makes you wonder if one could truly exist without the other.

If you've ever read "Diary" by Chuck Palahniuk (the author of "Fight Club", "Choke", etc) he touches on some of this in his book. Well, in a super dark twisted way - but similar ideas are still there. It's worth a read if you haven't picked it up yet, especially for people with creative backgrounds.

I guess there always has to be some kind of balance with all things - and each inspires creativity in it's own way.

Whoa - that was a super deep post, right there! Well, at least for me. ;)

I Love You, But Goodbye - Langhorne Slim

Another beautiful song from Lanhorne Slim...
Heartbreaking & poetic - I love this stuff!

Texting is ruining dating (if you ask me)...

I'm sure guys have this problem with ladies as well, but I gotta say it's driving me nutso.
I know that technology has opened up numerous doors of communication for us, however I'm starting to believe that texting has completely ruined the world of dating. My reasoning? It's messing shit up!! How 'bout that for a reason? Trust me, if you're in the dating world today, you know what I mean.

Scenario:
Girl meets boy at a bar / after-work function / cookout / market / sidewalk.

Girl gives boy her phone number after some mild flirtation.

Boy says "I'll give you a call, and we'll have a drink".

Girl gets a text 3 days later asking what she's up to the upcoming weekend.

Girl is confused, as he said he would CALL, not text.

Girl wonders if she should text back, or call back. She thinks about the 3-day "rule", but then re-thinks that maybe she shouldn't call, as it may seem too much too soon. Then she thinks "I kinda want to talk to this guy before I see him again so that I have a little more contact with him instead of just on a sidewalk". So she texts him back saying something like - "sure, call me this weekend & we'll get together", hoping he'll take the bait.

Boy texts again over the weekend saying "whatcha doing tonight?"

Girl thinks: WTF??? Did he miss my clever text, specifically asking him to call?? This guy seems like kind of a pussy if he can't just call me....

You see what's going on here? The boy is screwing up before anything has even begun! Really - what's cuter than talking to a boy that's all nervous about calling you? Texting has thrown yet another big fat confusing wrench into the already frustrating dating system.

The next time I give a guy my number, I'm going to tell him I save $5 / month by not getting text messages on my phone. Sure, they'll figure out the little lie eventually (if things go well) - but by then it won't matter, and it'll be something we both share in a laugh about.

Who's comin' with me!?

Flight of the Conchords - LIVE

I know I've been posting a helluva lot of videos lately, but I haven't had time to write much of anything, so in an effort to post things interesting while keeping my lazy state - here's some videos!

Last night I started watching the first season of "Flight of the Conchords". I've seen a few episodes, but never the whole thing. I watched the first 4 episodes last night, and laughed my a** off! Their monotone deliveries, and strange awkward humor made up some of the funniest crap I've seen all year. I even went as far as to wikiquote some lines from the season - the laughing continued:

Mugger: What is this? Why does this phone have a camera glued to it?
Bret: It's a camera phone. Jemaine wanted one for his birthday.
Mugger: [To other mugger] Look at this. [To Bret] Oh yeah? Where'd you get it?
Bret: I made it. It's homemade.
Mugger: Yeah, it's a piece of shit.
Bret: Well, how come Jemaine likes it so much?
Jemaine: You can have it.
Here's a video clip of the guys playing a live show too. They're actually coming to Red Rocks soon, but I doubt I'll be able to afford a ticket! Ah well - I'll just have to enjoy them from afar. :)

Mayo Clinic - Piano Time

This one totally made me smile!

I guess at the Mayo Clinics they have pianos that anybody can stop & play. They add to the healing environment, and make people giddy with all that happy energy. This video is just one wonderful example of that. Enjoy!
